Peach Canning

While this is not totally related to the BID, I think it ties in.

Monday August 16th I had the great opputunity to learn and participate in peach canning at Windmill Farms. They had also been canning pickels and green beans, and still have more to come.

I had sooo much fun and learned a lot. I think my fear of canning has been lifted.

I look forward to trying to make some since out of what all is going on in the garden at my house. We have growing lots of tomatoes, peppers, tomatillos, and corn to say the least. I think I see salsa and relish in my future. Then comes fall/winter and seven orange trees. We will see what comes of that.

Thanks again Frank and Paula, family & friends!!!!

SALSA CONTEST

It's time for the Great Gridley Salsa Contest.

We have been waiting for the weather to cooperate. There are finely ripe tomatoes and peppers on the vines and ready to pick.

Bring out your best salsa recipe and let the public decide where you stand. Contact BID for more info.

Kickin' Off a New Season!!

We are off the a great start. Aside from the weather from last week, it has been great.

New to the blog, we will be featuring a farmer and a vendor every week.

Green Beginnings Farm:
Green Beginnings was founded in 2002, and farmer Tyson Heusser came to this area to farm along side some good friends he attended Cal Poly with. Over the past year he has devoted his efforts into a local farming operation and has gained a huge amount of experience on the ranch where the Green Beginnings Farm will be located. Tyson would like to invite you to become a part of the 2010 Community Supported Agriculture (CSA).

What is a CSA and how does it work?
CSA is a partnership of mutual commitment between a farm and a community of supporters which provides a direct link between the production and consumption of food. Local farms are teaming up to bring you the oppertunity to recieve a weekly box of fresh and healthy produce grown right here in your community. Produce will be available from May to November and will consist of a weekly supply of for approximately a family for four. Weekly pick ups can be made at the Gridley Farmer's Market. Contact Tyson for more information greenbeginnings@live.com.

Green Beginnings recipe of the week: Turnip French Fries

turnips, olive oil, Salt & Pepper (other seasoning can be used)

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Peel turnips and slice into french-fry strip.
Toss lightly wit olive oil.
Sprinkle with seasoning
Lay flat on a baking sheet and bake for 20-30 minutes, turning once.
Enjoy!!

Painted Sky Soap:
Painted Sky soap are a husband and wife team that create homemade goat milk soaps and lotions from farm to you. From the farm, they raise and milk the goats. From the "kitchen", they create a diverse variety of handmade soaps, salves, lotions, and creams. And on to you, find them at the Farmer's Market each week with year round and seasonal varieties. Contact them at michelle@paintedskysoap.com

2010 Farmer's Market

We here at the Gridley Business Improvement District are happy to be nearing the start of the 2010 season.

For the first time, Farmer's Market will not be located in Daddow Park. We are excited to be moving to our new location in the parking lot of Harshbarger's Ace Hardware at 1629 Hwy 99. Not only does this location bring us more visibility, it brings us the potential of new vendors and shoppers.

The Market will begin on the Tuesday May 18th and run through September 28th. The hours will remain the same, 5:00 pm - 8:00 pm.

If you are interested in becoming a vendor, or just want some more information contact Jerry at 530/846.3687.

Final Market of the Season

It's the final market of the season and we're going to celebrate. We are looking forward to an evening of music, laughter, and fun. Marty Martins will be playing throughout the evening. Fat Daddy will be cooking up his hot dogs. All of the farmers will be selling their great produce. And of course, Jerry will be there making sure everyone is having a good time.

Congratulations is due to the winner of the Homemade Ice Cream contest. Diane Krosivic won first place with her Pineapple Ice Cream. Kris won 2 prizes. Second place with Vanilla and toppings, and third place with a risky Maple Nut Bacon Ice Cream.

Not to worry...We won't let you go to long without an event.

Coming Up SOON:

October 3rd- 4th Annual Uptown, Downtown, All Around Town YARD SALE
AND
3rd Annual Great Gridley Chili Cook-Off

This year the yard sale not only includes Gridley, but also Biggs and Live Oak. Just think of it 15 miles of Yard Sales. If that is not good enough, swing by Daddow Park to enjoy a little competition and great chili. Vendors will be out with all sorts of things. Tasting kits will be available to purchase.
